Going to cosmetology school is fun, inspiring, and provides you with the knowledge and foundation for a fulfilling career in the beauty industry. But for full disclosure’s sake, we have to call out the awkward aspects too!
Awkward Aspect 1: Carrying Around Doll Heads
When I went to cosmetology school, a local businessman said to a group of students, I always know cosmetology school is in session when I see you guys walking down the street carrying your plastic doll heads by the hair. Hm. It is quite awkward if you don’t know the context. The truth is, you will go through quite a lot of mannequin heads during your cosmetology school journey. And it probably won’t end after you graduate. Your practice mannequin heads will have long hair, short hair, beautiful hair colors, colors gone wrong, and more. But better to test techniques and color formulas on doll heads than on a guest!
Awkward Aspect 2: The Funeral Wardrobe
Open up a cosmetology student or licensed hair stylist’s closet and know what you’ll find? A sea of black. Black clothes, black shoes, black everything. And the funny thing is that some stylists don’t even know why that’s the industry standard. Besides black being a common hue for professional attire, it’s common particularly in salon settings because it provides a neutral backdrop while working on guests. What better way to see the true color of a client’s hair than to see it against the ultimate neutral shade?
Awkward Aspect 3: The Perpetual Examination of Hair
Once you know how to cut, style, and color hair properly, it is hard to ignore when you see something done incorrectly on someone else’s head. But the good news is you will also be aware of the great work of other stylists too! And you will be able to be someone’s hero from a hair service gone wrong.
Awkward Aspect 4: Hair Jargon
Most professions have a common lingo, and the beauty profession is no exception. You will find yourself talking to other stylists using words and phrases that will sound foreign to outsiders: “She is a starting level 3,” “But think about her hair porosity,” “There won’t be a line of demarcation.” Etc. Etc. But that acquired language will help you formulate the best hair plan for your guest.
