A client consultation can either make or break a salon hair, skin, or nails appointment. At Alure Hair Academy, we always teach our students that it is vital to ensure that you are on the same page as your client PRIOR to beginning the salon service. There is no room for guessing what a client is anticipating as the result of a service.
Key 1: Be a Good Listener
One of the great desires of being human is to be heard. For salon clients, feelings of anxiety are increased when they think their stylist isn’t listening or understanding their desired look. How do we fix that? We make eye contact. We refrain from interrupting while they explain their challenges and desires for the requested service. We give them our undivided attention so that they know that we care!
Key 2: Ask the Right Questions
There are few things worse than realizing you haven’t obtained enough information before starting a salon service. Maybe you began a color service and found out midway through that the client had previous box color or henna on their hair. Maybe you found out that they are taking a medication that adversely reacts with a chemical you are using or that they have an allergy to a salon product being used. Maybe you thought a client wanted a shorter haircut, but then realized that she wanted enough length left to fit into a ponytail because she frequents the gym. While a stylist may be tempted to rush through a consultation due to a busy schedule, the results of a service from a poor consultation will have even worse negative repercussions on the stylist’s schedule, the service costs, and most importantly, the trust and satisfaction of the client.
Key 3: Restate the Plan and Receive Agreement
A consultation conversation can go in many different directions before landing on a final plan. It is vital to restate the agreed upon plan prior to beginning to ensure stylist and client are on the same page, as well as get the verbal agreement of the client to proceed with the plan. This not only protects the stylist to ensure that they are proceeding with the appropriate plan to ensure satisfaction, but it also gives feeling of security to the client knowing that they are “in good hands”.
