"It's not a real career."
"Aren't salons filled with drama?"
"You will never make any money."
These are just a few of the statements and questions surrounding the topic of a career in cosmetology. And the truth is, many of the statements we hear are simply myths. So let us help you debunk them:
Myth #1: "It's not a real career."
Did you know that according to a U.S. Department of Education longitudinal study, people with career and technical educations are more likely to be employed than their counterparts with academic credentials?
This isn't shocking to us at all! The beauty industry is filled with incredibly talented professionals who have spent their lives making a career out of cosmetology...hair stylists, nail artists, estheticians, business men and women who represent beauty brands, runway stylists, and the list goes on.
There are so many opportunities to pursue once you have acquired your cosmetology license. And when you find the path within the beauty industry that's right for you, many times you discover that bringing out the beauty and confidence of others is truly fulfilling and transformative.
Myth #2: "Aren't salons filled with drama?"
Well...sometimes that's true. Just like there are "bad apples" in any profession you pursue, there are some "bad apples" within the beauty industry. But that's why it's so important to choose a school that will help you be placed in the best environment! We have worked so hard and have been successful in creating a warm, friendly, and drama-free culture in our salons, and we work hard to establish relationships with others in the industry who share those same values.
Myth #3: "You will never make any money."
One of the most liberating aspects of a career in cosmetology is the flexibility of how to make an income! Your income is in your control. For many careers within cosmetology, your income is based on how hard you work...unlike other careers where income is fixed or perhaps based on the favor of your supervisor.
What kind of income are you looking to gain?
Hourly or Commission? Maybe you would enjoy a career as a hair stylist, nail technician, or esthetician.
Salary? Maybe a career within the business of beauty is right for you...like a product rep working for a beauty product company.
Contract or Part-Time Work? Maybe you would enjoy doing runway or bridal work.
There are many conventional and out-of-the-box ways to earn a living as a cosmetologist.
