Makeup Tip 1: Simmer Down on the Shimmer
Shimmer and glittery makeup is beautiful in person but can cause issues when it comes to photography. The way the light reflects off the glitter interferes with the camera, causing you to look less than flattering. If you are looking for a healthy glow, maybe try using a dewy makeup setting spray for a natural shine or a dewy foundation (as long as your skin doesn’t tend to be oily…if it does, matte might be a better option). Opt for matte finish for most other makeup products being used.
Makeup Tip 2: Determine the Correct Shade for Your Foundation
It is not enough to determine that you have fair, medium, or dark skin. There are so many variations of fair, medium, and dark that you need to dig a little further by determining your undertone too. Do you have cool undertones, warm undertones, or neutral undertones to your skin? A trick to figuring this out is to take a look at your wrist. Do your veins look blue? Then you have cool undertones. Do your veins look green? Then you have warm undertones. Combination of both? Then you are more neutral. Another way is to consider what type of jewelry you like to wear. If you feel you look better in gold jewelry, your undertone is warm. Silver? Your undertone is cool.
Why is this important? Because it is never pretty to see a line of demarcation between where you’ve applied your foundation and the rest of your skin! When you don’t get the shade right, you don’t get the look right. And nothing is worse than having a blotchy skin photo.
Makeup Tip 3: Avoid trends
If you want your photo to be timeless, we recommend avoiding trendy makeup. This is always our recommendation for weddings because you never want to look back at your wedding photos and think, “oh, that wedding happened in the ‘80s.” A classic beauty look consists of neutral/natural colors, or colors that are flattering to your skin tone and enhance your best features.
Makeup Tip 4: Blend, Blend, Blend!
Makeup done well enhances the beauty of the person its on. When you blend your makeup properly, ensuring colors meld seamlessly with each other, it draws attention to the person’s beauty and not to harsh lines in places where there shouldn’t be.
Makeup Tip 5: Choose a Focal Point
If you are going for a bold eye look, consider downplaying the lips. If going for a bold lip, consider going for a more neutral, natural eye look. Choosing a focal point is more appealing to the eye and tends to make for a better photo.
But what’s our most important makeup rule of all?
There are no rules! Makeup is an art and different occasions may call for different makeup techniques to be used. Have fun with it! These tips are our best practices for photos, but do what makes sense for your situation.
