Sometimes stylists take hair basics for granted, forgetting that salon guests do not have the knowledge that professionals do. Here are some common hair basics that salon guests are never told.
Hair Basic #1: Shampoo hair with warm water to open up the pores of your scalp and the hair cuticle. This aids in cleansing the hair. Condition hair with COLD water. This will close the pores and hair cuticle, giving your hair shine, locking in moisture to reduce frizz, and bringing the hair back to a healthy pH for hair.
Hair Basic #2: Salon guests are often told to get regular trims if they want their hair to grow, but many times stylists neglect to explain WHY that’s necessary. Yes, it’s true that hair grows from the scalp; however, as the hair gets longer and is exposed to chemicals, environmental elements, heat tools, and everyday wear and tear, the hair breaks/splits at the end. The hair gets longer from the scalp but never progresses at the ends because of the breakage.
Hair Basic #3: Frizz is the hair literally reaching out for moisture. If you have challenges with frizzy hair, look for professional salon products created for your hair type (either fine, medium, or coarse) that will give you hair the appropriate amount of moisture it needs.
Hair Basic #4: When blow drying, proper sectioning, tension, and heat control is key. To set the shape/curl you desire for your hair, make sure you allow the hair to cool inside the brush before releasing it or blast it with a cool shot from the blow dryer to set it faster. When the hair is still warm, that means the hair is still pliable to be formed into a shape.
Hair Basic #5: For most people, the roots of the hair do not need to be conditioned after being shampooed. Only use conditioner from the mid-shafts to the ends of the hair. Roots are healthy new hair growth so over conditioning could cause your hair to feel greasy. Situations where you might want to condition the roots of your hair is if your roots have been damaged in some way or if you typically have overall dry hair.
